In recent years, race meet insurance regulations have tightened the noose on open pony races, but the innovative junior field masters chase series fills the gap in junior rider development.
Races are open to young riders on ponies or horses, with divisions for each. Horses and riders must have hunted or been active in pony club.
Unlike the free-for-all miniature cavalry charges of pony racing past, in the masters series riders follow a designated senior field master at a “hunting pace" over a flagged course of jumps (often the point-to-point meet’s timber course) between a halfmile and 2 miles.
