The Worley property on the north end of the Tbwn of Washington has come full circle.
In 2003 and 2004, the land where Main Street becomes Fodderstack Road was embroiled in litigation sparked by an Architectural Review Board ruling that denied Sid and Mary Catherine Worley’s request to build a house using synthetic materials.
The ARB considered another application for construction on the property at its monthly meeting on Feb. 8, but this time the proposal was much less contentious.
Old House Builders, which is under contract to buy two lots from the Worleys, is applying to build two historic-looking homes in the Cape Cod style. Steve Dareing and Bill Christian represented the Sperryville-based company at the meeting and said they hope to break ground on the houses between mid-March and early-May.
Mindful of any precedents they may be setting by approving the application, board members wanted to proceed with caution on the matter.
“We don’t often have one new house, let alone two, proposed in this town,” ARB Chairman Patrick O’Connell said.
Board members agreed that the planned designs of the two houses would complement the historic character of Washington, but the application did not specify the precise location of the proposed structures. That shortfall led ARB members to ask Dareing and Christian to return to the board’s March meeting with a more complete application.
