does not keep records of its patients’ citizenship, Bauman said the number of undocumented patients has increased steadily over the past 10 years. If the bill passes, Bauman said the clinic would be forced to shut its doors to hundreds of people in need. “We would comply with the law, but my hope would be that the law would leave some avenue to help folks in need of medical attention,” Bauman said. “We see the consequence of public policy on a very human level.”
Del. Kristen Amundson (DFairfax) is one of the 29 delegates who voted against the bill. She said the bill is unethical, as well as impractical.
“It’s a huge paperwork burden. These are organizations that are always operating on a shoe-string (budget) at best,” Amundson said. “If you run a hypothermia shelter where you say, “We will take anybody off the street tonight so they don’t freeze,’ you don’t stand there and check documentation.”
