A love of foxhunting in the formal English manner traveled to Virginia with the Fairfax clan and other Cavalier families in the early 1700’s. Hunting parties were reported over their Alexandria estates. In 1736, Thomas, the sixth Lord Fairfax, started taking out grants in his own name of the 110,000-acre grant given to an ancestor by King Charles II in 1649.
By 1748, Thomas had estab, lished a county seat at Green way Court in Clarke County where he spent the balance of his days hosting hunting parties for all comers.
