Searches by Delaplanebased sporting author Peter Winants, an expert in source material, turned up a race over jumps at the Washington, D.C. Jockey Club in 1834, and another on Long Island, N.Y. in 1842. Winants’ definitive book, “Steeplechasing,” includes among other rare illustrations, a racing program listing a twomile hurdle race at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in 1865.
Winants also includes in his book reports on. a steeplechase staged at the height of the Civil War near Fredericksburg at Falmouth, in 1863.
The fact that the instigators were members of the Irish Brigade and the date was St. Patrick’s Day probably explainn why war-weary soldiers laid down their arms for a day and a reported 10,000 spectators attended.
