After 14 seasons of working with the Rappahannock County High School girls’ athletic programs, Rhonda Jenkins has decided to become a spectator.
Jenkins handed in her resignation Monday morning as the head girls basketball coach, after her Lady Panthers completed a painful 2-20 season, including a 14game slide to end the 2006-07 campaign.
The losing season was not the catalyst for the resignation, Jenkins pointed out. The stress of not having enough players and personal reasons led to her decision.
“I made a deal with my boys,” she said. “If I went back to coaching, stress would be the biggest factor. I told them that if it gets to be too stressful and it effects my health, I needed to step away. It’s been a combination of things, and I’ve been thinking about it for awhile.”
After taking off a year to battle cancer, Jenkins returned for the 2005-06 season and led the Lady Panthers to a 5-18 record, their finest season in many years.
