wmants reported though that the first nreaT* American steeplechase, which he defines as being over obstacles other than soft brush hurdles, was held in Paterson, NJ. in 1866.
But now here’s the good part Winants also writes of a hurdle race held at Fauquier Springs Spa right here in Fauquier County in 1838. His source for this was an esteemed Clarke County historian, the late Alexander Mackay-Smith, but other references can be found elsewhere.
The Fauquier Springs resort, now the site of a country club and golf course, was built between 1834 and 1837; it was a hub of social activity until it the spa burned in 1862.
The race course, which lay along the Rappahannock River, was named for the gallant mare Victoria, who died after the first race held there. Probably this same location was the site of Wanrenton’s annual jousting tournament described in a letter of July 1854, as being held in "a smooth meadow on the Kanta of the Rappahannock. The spectators and judges occupy < upon the hill which rises immediately above the meadow.”
