No longer echoes on hardtop, the horses’ hooves now pat cadence against the packed gray surface, “step-swooshstep-swoosh” as front toes drag through the top fraction of stone dust.
Then the horses step onto the new training track; the onlooker expects a new sound, maybe a “thump-thump” or a “thud” as the pair eases into a trot.
Nothing. Not a sound.
Audible footfalls cease altogether. Hie horses may well have vanished into thin air for tbo lack of noise they’re making^ They ease into a canter, bwl there’s only the wind rustling the tree branches lining an old fenceline nearby.
The track surface, one of the new style synthetic blends, absorbs all sound, providing a stable, forgiving surface for framing » at gawd and for extended endurance work as well. And this, McClure says, is the beauty of the modern Ameri-track product, this or one like it being installed at many of the nation’s tracks and training centers.
It’s something very important to McClure, who’s intrusted for the care of some 30 horses in varying stages of training.
