interesting series. I hope well see more. I enjoyed reading both the articles and made numerous notes on the newspaper as I read. The quantity of my notes dictated that I could only address one of the themes (the Sane Economy) and that only in a macro sense. While I fully agree that we desperately need better stewardship of our planet, my opinion is that Ms. Theodore’s premise is built on a foundation of quicksand.
We have seen too many failures of centralized command economies to believe that, no matter how smart or well intentioned, a government commission will get it right. The mandatory limit to gross national product is based on a false premise - a static population. The mandatory limit to growth and the theoretical nogrowth production system makes no sense without population control. How else can we prevent the need for “ever more paying jobs”? Are we ready for that?
