In any smaller, far-flung town like Amissville, the post office plays an important role. It’s a gathering place as we come to get our mail, send our packages and buy our stamps. In that sense our town is much like a lot of other small places throughout this country. In fact, there’s been a post office here , almost as long as there’s been an Amissville. The first post office was established here in 1810. Of course, it looked nothing like the modem, convenient place we head to these days. Our current building was built in 2000 and has everything you could want in a post office. Before they built the current building, the post office was housed at the comer of U.S. 211 and Viewtown Road in what is now American Motorcycles.
Staff at the post office are also involved in the local community in ways many of us never think about. We’ve probably seen the “Wanted” posters up on the wall. But they do more than just notify us about who the bad guys are. The post office works with a number of groups to raise money for worthy causes, such as breast cancer research. They do that through selling special stamps that cost slightly more but where a few cents of the cost of each stamp goes to fund that cause. They also do an annual food collection drive in the spring. Nationally they collect over 70 million pounds of food each year!
