A hunt member rides the course ahead of time, pre-setting the optimum time that competitors then try to replicate. Not until every rider has completed the course is the secret time revealed and winners announced.
Most Virginia spring hunter pace courses are about three miles in length, making the average “optimum tune” elapsed around 20 minutes. Some courses are more conducive to speed, making the time somewhat slower, but rainy, muddy or parched conditions alter the expected time as the pace-setting rider takes all conditions into account.
