The two races, winch shared committee members and common goals, cantered along companionably in that fashion, one in the old-fashioned point-topoint tradition (formerly a sport in which contestants literally chose the route they deemed most direct and safest for their skill set from two pre-set points), the other up-to-the minute with important prizes, for a long time.
Eventually, the old-fashioned point-to-point format was abandoned for the more popular standard race course format used by Virginia point-to-points today.
But if a friend new to the sport asks you exactly what a point-to-point is, why not explain the roots of the sport in local terms and leave out the overquoted tale of the early Irish race for once.
