Their scores on reading and math achievement tests, however, have improved by a much wider margin than scores on ability tests. In 1975-76, fourth graders ranked in the 46th percentile on reading, 52nd in language, 46th in math concepts, 43rd in math computation 38th in math totals, 49th in social studies and 51st in science.
The gap in ability versus achievement shows up also in some sections of the eleventh grade scores. Rappahannock’s 1979-80 juniors ranked in the 39th percentile nationwide on ability tests, three points behind the state average of 42.
On achievement tests, the same eleventh graders scored in the 47th percentile in reading* 38th in language, 35th in math totals, 45th in social studies and 33rd in science.
While scores for eleventh graders statewide have remained relatively unchanged in the past four years, significant progress has been made by Rappahannock students.
In 1975-76, eleventh graders here ranked in the 29th percentile based on ability, 26th percentile in reading achievement, 25th in language, 23vd, in math t^tal*. 34th in social sttidies and 26th in science.
Eighth graders statewide have shown a slight improvement in mathematics and language during the past five years, going from the 41st percentile in 1974-75 to 49th percentile in math and the 45th percentile in language in 1979-80. The
