Culpeper Memorial Hospital is 106,000 square feet of extremes. On a recent day, people on its two floors ranged from a newborn'baby boy cuddled in a square of blue flannelette to a 97-year-old nursing home resident. In a downstairs coma- people were engaged in the routine cataloguing of supplies and the sorting of laundry into machines; upstairs, others were engaged in the exacting, sometimes dramatic work of monitoring an Intensive Care Unit. Closed doors kept the operating rooms, least routine of all, offlimits.
A tour from one end of Culpeper’s hospital to the other covers a lot of ground and even more activities. The main lobby, into which a visitor enters, is a preview of the whole facility. It is large, to allow for future growth of the hospital, and deceptively quiet. A member of the hospital Auxiliary generally sits at the information desk, and doors open off into an employee and community relations office, a snack shop, a glassed-in gift shop, and a classroom and conference room.
