The birth rate at CMH has remained fairly steady at 300-325 babies a year, in- . defiance of national trends. Fetal monitoring equipment and other newborn care available now read) an impressive level, backed up by a neo-natal mobile unit which operates from the University of Virginia Hospital, and can transport a baby with very unusual needs very quickly. At the end of this corridor is the pediatrics unit, a Jayceette project. It has four rooms, three with two beds each for small patients and one playroom, and features bright curtains and a nursing station of its own. It also has a “people washer,” with a unique chair which can roll from a bedside right to the washing room, and then be lowered into its tub for a special lanolin solution bath. The nursing home was the first place to have a people washer of its own at CMH; concern for better patient care is the common tie in the faces of the hospital.
