The travel slump that has plagued Shenandoah National Park since gas prices started on their upward climb appears to be easing.
Compared to February, 1979, visits last month to the park were down but by a much smaller margin, only 8.8 per cent. Visits in January, 1980, showed a decline of almost 20 per cent over the previous year.
In February, 1980, 26,000 visitors toured the park compared to 28,500 in February, 1979. Overnight stays this February amounted to 1,197 contrasted to 2,294 in the same month of 1979.
Weather statistics released by park superintendent Robert Jacobsen show the maximum temperature at Big Meadows in February was 56 degrees while the minimum was minus two degrees.
Snowfall measured 21 inches and precipitation totaled 1.51 inches.
