me emergency room, just across the hall, has seen steady growth from 45.000 annual visits ten years ago to more than 12.000 yearly now. It has 24hour physician coverage, and the hospital administration has been working with the Emergency Medical Services Council to improve the care it can offer. This year, the MidDay Lions gave a needed boost to emergency services by donating an ambulance to take patients with, for example, severe head injuries or bums, to other facilities such as the University of Virginia Hospital. Some out-patient surgery is also done here, for relatively minor problems when admission would be far more costly and is not really necessary. In radiology, the vital diagnosis work of X-raying is carried out.
