When the sun moves directly above the Earth’s equator at 6:10 a.m. on Marqh 20, spring begins. This moment, referred to as the vernal equinox (from the Latin words “vernal” meaning spring, and “equinox,” equal night), marks, the arrival of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere.
“From March 20 until the beginning of summer on June 21,” Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger, Jr., Director of the Science Museum of Virginia, explained, “the sun will move higher in our (northern), hemisphere bringing more heat, and with it the seasonal changes.”
The first day of spring and the first day of autumn are the only times when the length of day and night are equal. It is on these two days, also, that the sun will rise due east and set due west. For the next six months, the sun will rise northeast and set northwest giving longer hours of daylight than darkness.
Since this was a leap year, spring occurs earlier in the calendar, but will arrive progressively later for the next three years.
