Why The
Ruckus?
To the editor:
As a new resident of Rappahannock I am most surprised at the emotional ruckus raised over the simple proposal to prohibit carrying loaded firearms on the highway. Most states plus hundreds and hundreds of counties throughout the United States have such laws, and their residents think no more about them than they do about prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons on their persons.
As I understand the proposal, it has nothing to do with restricting the transportation of shotguns or rifles either in or out of a car. If it did I’d seriously question its wisdom. To repeat, as has been done a jillion times, one can carry his gun in his car or pickup wherever and whenver he wants; it’s just that we - me included - should leave them unloaded on the highway. What’s so terrible about that?
If hunters and would-be hunters in the many hundreds of counties around the country can be comfortable with such a sane, simple law, why do we in Rappahannock think we should be considered superior?
I’m afraid some of us are being rather childish, as though our macho image will be tarnished if we don’t carry shells in our guns!
One other word: Why any hunter who has nothing to be ashamed of should be critical of a sincere, hard-working public servant such as Game Warden Bankston for sup porting a proposal that will enable him to serve us better is beyond me. ■ We all complain about clockwatching civil servants who are interested in their jobs only for the money they can get from them, but here we have a man who is interested in doing the very best job possible, in a most unrewarding position. After all, he’s working long and hard for us, and we should give him our thanks instead of our complaints about his attitude.
Come on, now, everybody: Let’s permit ourselves to be brought into the twentieth century! And please - let’s not get so EMOTIONAL about it the next time the proposal comes up before the Board of Supervisors !!
