March 20 will be celebrated nationally as Agriculture Day to salute agri-business and help educate the American consumer about the contributions, concerns and challenges of American agriculture.
*'Ag Day’s purpose is to make the 96 per cent of the American population that doesn’t farm aware of the challenges facing agriculture and it’s impact on all of our lives,” said James I. Scott, national chairman and vice president of the Agriculture Day Foundation.
Although only 4 per cent of the American population actually farms, four of 10 working Americans are involved in food and fiber production or the distribution chain.
American agriculture is the nation’s leading industry, with assets nearly equal to the total assets of all stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange ($790 billion). Agri-business is also the nation’s leading employer with over IS million people involved.
