Limited to youth under 16, the Optimist International Oratorical Contest has sought, since its inception in 1928, to honor and encourage the best young speakers and to offer training and experience to young citizens. In recognition of its value to students, the National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed the contest on its advisory list of national contests and activities.
The official subject of this year’s contest was, “Our Challenge in the ”80’s’’. Contestants had to prepare their own speeches which were judged in respect to organization of material, delivery, presentation, and overall effective! ss.
The final stage of the contest will take place at the district level in June, in which first place winners will receive $500 scholarships.
