inadequate diet and excessive smoking. Virginians are income eligible for WIC if they are eligible for health care either free or at a reduced cost at their local health department.

Once certified for the program, participants are assigned a food package based on their nutritional conditions. Each participant receives WIC checks monthly from the local health department and redeems them for the assigned foods at participating grocery stores or pharmacies.

WIC Program food cannot be counted as income and will not affect a family’s qualifications for food stamps, school food programs or public assistance. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is available to eligible persons regardless of race, color, religion or national origin.
