Since the spacious new coronary - intensive care unit at Culpeper Memorial Hospital opened in 1979, there has been a dramatic increase in the admissions of patients needing such care. People needing lower levels of care have also benefited, in better use of other space in the hospital as a result of the project, underwritten entirely by the Rochester Corporation.
The hospital has had an intensive care unit since 1969, first providing the service when only 17 percent of all hospitals in Virginia had ICU's. Culpeper Memorial was one of the first hospitals of its size to have such a unit It then was at only 40 beds. The unit was provided as a memorial to Dr. Cedi G. Finney, who practiced medicine in Culpeper for 2b years. He died in 1968, and it was a desire to honor him which led to the new service.
Basically, two semiprivate rooms were concerted into a four-bed facility, run by especiallytrained nurses for both heart patients and postsurgical cases.
The Rochester Corporation made a contribution in 1975 which helped the hospital upgrade its ICU equipment, which becomes antiquated very rapidly.
