As semifinalists, the students have completed only the first step in the Merit Scholarship competition. To become one of the approximately 13,500 finalists who will be considered for awards, the semifinalists must meet additional rigorous standards. They must document high academic performance throughout high school, receive the recommendation and endorsement of their principals, confirm their earlier qualifying scores on a second examination and provide considerable information about their interests, accomplishments and goals.
