Responsible for this sudden growth in the exposure of music videos is Music Television (MTV), the world's first 24 hour channel of video music. It was launched on August 1, 1981 by Warner Amex at a cost of more than $20 million. In two years, this Warner subsidiary has enrolled more than 14 million subscribers, reaching more than 15 percent of American homes. Also, it is carried on more than 1,300 cable systems.
MTV has united the sound of FM stereo with the imagery of television, and created a totally new state of the art in television viewing. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days-a-week, music videos are bombarding the small screen almost non-stop. Eight minutes of hourly commercials, (six national and two local) and the polished chatter of the video-jockeys, called VJs, are the only interruptions in the mesmerizing barrage of images.
The tremendous success of MTV in the musicvideo field has encouraged imitators. USA Cable Network offers “Night Flight” for four hours, t<vice weekly. Black Entertainment Television plays clips six hours weekly. Video Music Channel in Atlanta
