Early on a Friday evening a station wagon pulls up in front of a large brick home nestled on the side of a small mountain. The doors flv open and out burst four excited children, their weary parents and a pile of luggage. They have come to spend a weekend living in Christian community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at a place called Bethany House.
This scene was first enacted in October, 1979. In the two years that followed, over two hundred families found their way up route 211 to the big house on the hill just outside the town of Washington. When renovations began this past spring on Sommarbeth, the 207 acre farm in Huntly purchased as the new permanent home for Bethany House, many of the “alumni" of the “old” Bethany House returned to picturesque Rappahannock County to renew old friendships and to help the new place get started.
