Along with the Ellington music, a few outstanding performers in the show lend their talents to make Sophisticated Ladies work as a Broadway hit. The energetic, charismatic Gregg Burge steals the show in his solo "Kinda Dukish," with a most amazing demonstration of flap-ball-change and toe-heal to hit the floor. Tapping up and down the staircase, snapping his fingers and slapping his knees, Burge has endless zest and vitality.
Along with Burge, Ira Hawkins, Christina Saffron, Janet Hubert and Dee Dee Bridgewater give a spirited performance throughout. Yet this still doesn't suffice to give the show that special ingredient that grabs an audience, making them walk out of the theatre musically fulfilled and ready to dance.
