Asked what single factor is responsible for the success of National Geographic, Garrett responds "Integrity. People feel they can trust the magazine." Maintaining integrity requires Garrett and his assistants to verify each piece of information in each article before publication. Garrett says that a sense of adventure is also responsible for making the magazine so popular. "We're a sort of arm chair traveler," he adds.

Garrett professes that the most rewarding aspect of his job is working and meeting with people of colorful backgrounds. "At Geographic, a constant parade of really good people come through...biologists, anthropologists, geologists, mountaineers, adventurers, con-artists..."
