Petitions are being circulated throughout Rappahannock County in an attempt to generate support for school issues before the November 8 general election.
A newly organized group, Rappahannock Citizens for Quality Education, has 20 petition takers already working and is still soliciting volunteers. “The most important thing, of course, is to get the support of the supervisor candidates and current office holders,” explained Nancy Schoppet, one of the organizers. “We want this to be a cooperative venture. We believe that the statement of support we’re asking people to sign is a reasonable compromise, the type of thing that everybody can get behind."
Meeting over the past month, the Rappahannock Citizens for Quality Education (RCQE) has come up with a list of specific recommendations for improving the county’s public schools. The group believes that the improvements, coupled with tougher new state requirements for graduation, will strengthen education in Rappahannock County.
The changes recommended by the citizens group will cost $191,500 to implement which works out to nine cents on the tax rate or an increase of approximately $63 on the average Rappahannock County taxpaver’s annual bill, according to the RCQE. “We
