ihere have been several horses already that have broken down in training this season because of the heat and the hard ground. Entries are going to suffer like they did at Fair Hill unless we get some rain.
“Soft going is ideal for steeplechasing, and hard is probably the worst. But it has to rain sometime. If we get a good amount of rain, then we should have a good season with some strong entries. If it does not rain, the entries will probably be light, but racing will still go on," he concluded.
The ground at Fairfax is like concrete," said Don Himpz, promotion manager for the Fairfax Hunt Races, which start the steeplechasing season in Virginia."
The drought has been less of a problem at some of the Virginia courses than it has at others.
