Thirteen was an unlucky number for the Rappahannock Panthers last week as they allowed a strong, disciplined Eastern Mennonite squad to score 13 goals while never getting the ball into the net themselves.
EM skunked Rappahannock last year, 11-0 and 7-0 in RCHS’s first soccer season. His boys had the right attitude going into Thursday's contest in Harrisonburg, according to coach Glenn Davis. “They knew they’d improved since last year and they thought Eastern Mennonite hadn’t. They also felt that Eastern Mennonite might underestimate them. They thought maybe, if they played their game, they just might beat them.”
But the Panthers only maintained the disciplined formations of their practice sessions for the first five minutes. Rapp's front line of Doug McCabe, Vinnie Caporuscio, James Dennis and Mike DelGrosso attacked first. They kept the EM goalie busy with shot after shot at the net. Rarely did the ball go past mid-field and when it did, Rappahannock’s * defense booted it back toward the EM goal.
Then, like punctured balloons, the Panthers lost their discipline, enthusiasm and determination after a yellow jersey headed a shot into the RCHS net, the only head shot score by EM in the long afternoon. “We’d tred to score and they turned us back. And then vhey got a goal bn a lucky shot. We just fell apart after that,” coach Davis said, adding that the exchange convinced the Panthers they were outmatched. “We just watched them play for the rest of the game.”
