a sewage treatment system clown to a point where Sperrvville’s low and moderate income families can afford monthly user fees. According to Health Department and SWCB officials, the innovative STEP (septic tank effluent pump) collection system and conventional package treatment facility will eliminate the pollution in the Thornton River which runs through the center of the village. The river has been contaminated by drainage from malfunctioning septic fields in flood plain soils. That same drainage has also polluted ground water in the area, according to tests conducted by the health department on wells in Sperryville.
Carson Johnson, chairman of Rappahannock’s Water and Sewer Authority, told the supervisors at a special meeting Monday night that the block grant money will make up the local share of the $2 million project. “Our application for Step 111 construction funds from ERA was hand delivered to Richmond today. . .All the paper work on this end has been done.
