Theatre fans have known it all along. There's something immediate about a live performance that nothing—not televison (even cable), not movies—can match. Even if you go reluctantly to see a play, chances are that night's performance offers something unexpected.
Didn't A1 Pacino knock props into the audience in his exuberant role in "American Buffalo?" Didn't Elizabeth Taylor actually show up for all the performances of "Private Lives?" Wasn't Cicely Tyson beautiful even if her acting in "The Corn Is Green" wasn't so hot?
