Tops District Teams
Rappahannock's runners took fourth among the 18 schools competing in Saturday’s Eastern Mennonite Invitational in Harrisonburg, topping Strasburg and Stonewall, the other Bull Run District representatives.
“As a whole, I felt our boys ran poorly. However, Scott Keithley and Craig Kenyon both bettered the times they had last year at the Invitational,” coach Spieker reported.
On Saturday, Keithley was ninth over the line for an invitational medal, finishing in 15:51, 27 seconds behind the winner from Buffalo Gap but well ahead of the 16:25 he posted in 1982 for the three-mile course.
Other runners finishing for Rappahannock and their times were Chris Caperton (16:45), Ronnie Atkins (16:54), Craig Kenyon (17:11), Ricky Shaw (17:38), El wood Dodson (17:38) and David Dodson (18:15).
“Most of the Rappahannock boys ran in the upper third of the runners,” coach Spieker noted. “Chris (Caperton) did very well for his first big meet,” she said, adding that Ronnie Atkins, usually the number two man for RCHS, was slowed by illness.
Team results were Western Albemarle 55, Buffalo Gap 101, Waynesboro 153 and Rappahannock 156. Strasburg had 200 for ninth and Stonewall Jackson 278 for 11th. Luray, Rappahannock’s rival from the old Skyline District, was eighth with 199 points.
Competing as a junior varsity squad, the RCHS ninth graders joined forces with the two girl runners to take third place out of ten teams.
John Dodson was first to finish for Rappahannock and 12th overall in 19:13.
