In this election year, with every seat in the General Assembly up for grabs, the highways and byways of the Commonwealth are very nearly clogged with candidates for the Senate and the House of Delegates plying their political wares.
And somewhere in the reams of position papers which just about every one of these candidates are profferring the voters is a platform plank which has become a staple of Old Dominion politics in recent years.
That platform plank decries, with a vast beating of the breast and shaking of the fists Heavenward, the alleged rampant spread of crime in the state. It is accompanied by a steely-eyed pledge to do something about it. Sentences must be tougher! The rascals must be locked up and the key thrown away! The only way to protect society is to put the crooks in the hoosegow and keep them there!
For the simpleminded, some aspiring politicians still trot out the now-hoary suggestion of “Uniform Sentencing.” The proposal would impose the same penalty for the same crime
