Beekeepers Meeting
The Northern Piedmont Beekeepers Association will present a program on “Pesticides and Pollinators” Thursday, September 29, 7 p.m., at Central Fidelity Bank, Southgate Shopping ('enter, Culpeper.
Guest speaker will be Dr. Douglas Pfeiffer, Assistant Professor at VPI and Fruit Entomologist at Shenandoah Valley Research Station. Pesticides are frequently damaging — and sometimW lethal — to honeybee colonies in this area. Dr. Pfeiffer will address the need for orchardists to use nongyb^es as pollinators, while still requiring pesticides.
All interested beekeepers and farmers are invited to attend.
Dyeing Workshop
Castleton fiber artist Kim Jacobson will give a vegetable dyeing workshop on Saturday, October 1.
She will show how to use exotic and local plant materials such as pokeberries, onionskins and fustic to dye wool, silk and cotton yarns. The workshop will also cover the history and secrets of dyeing as each student compiles a booklet of dyed yarn samples.
Jacobson has been using vegetable dyes on her yams for eight years. She weaves dyed yams into her own work and also sells to knitters, crocheters and other weavers. In addition, she teaches and demonstrates vegetable dyeing at the Smithsonian Institute, Textile Museum and Decatur House Museum, all in Washington, D. C., and at the Craftsbury Center in Vermont.
