Peter Labovitz repeated, “There is nothing we object to fundamental to their basic business goals.” He said he thought the town should make the building activity stop until officials have adequately reviewed the plans and there is open discussion in a public forum.
Finally he requested a complete review of the local zoning laws to strengthen them, a strong town plan with residential and commercial areas defined and establishment of an architectural review board. Labovitz volunteered to serve on such a board and also offered the services of the University of Virginia urban planning department in setting it up.
Reaction
These offers incensed Fran Eldred whose family has lived in the same spot in town for three generations. She lambasted the Labovitz family as typical of “people who come in (and are) suddenly experts on The Corner.”
“I resent the fact that everyone in town knows what’s best for us on The Corner,” she said. “Is this jealousy? The sweet smell of success in someone else? I resent those who speak who are not neighbors of The Inn and who are non-residents.”
