In The
South
We all recognize certain elements of the South—its speech patterns, its architecture, its hospitality, its food and literature. But how much do we really know about that region of the country reffered to as “the South?" According to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, many of us know very little about the rich Southern painting tradition.
So the museum decided to do something to remedy that situation. It began a comprehensive survey of the development of the art of the region. The result is a major exhibition entitled Painting In the South:1564-1980.
The exhibit is sponsored by Philip Morris , Incorporated and opens at the museum on September 14, continuing through November 27.
On September 22 and 23, there will be a twoday symposium on Southern lifestyle, history, culture and geography as well as art.
