that schools are one of the important issues in November’s election. “In 1980, the people of this county roared out their frustration about the way schools were being run in this county,” he said, pointing out that a referendum on changing the method of school board appointment carried by a staggering margin of nine to one. “Since then, we’ve had nothing but a shuffling of faces in the administration. There’s been no change. We still nepd improvements to the high school,” Kilpatrick said, adding that construction costs over the last ten years since those space needs were first documented have risen faster than inflation. “The longer we wait, the more it’s going to cost us.”
Kilpatrick said he wanted to see “open, reachable, straight forward government—not government that works in secret, not ‘we don’t need to tell you anything—just trust us.’” He pledged to work for more night meetings of the board of supervisors, especially for public hearings.
On the question of taxes, he maintained that the levy on licensed vehicles, the only items taxed as personal property, is too high and ought to be nearer the real estate rate.
Kilpatrick also noted that the county must deal with the issue of a landfill within the next few years.
“I ask for your vote,” he concluded. “I need your vote if we’re going to have open government that is open to ALL of us.”
(H. B. Wood, the incumbent in Stonewall-Hawthorne District, is not running for re-election. Kilpatrick’s opponent in the election, Nelson Lane, the district’s appointed representative on the school board, did no attend the Women’s Club forum.)

“I feel that coming out and seeing people is part of the job,” said Hubert Gilkey, Wakefield District supervisor who is running unopposed. “My vote affects everyone in this county and I will always be available to anyone from any district.”
