Approximately 800,000 acres of small grains are seeded in Virginia each year with over 500,000 acres harvested. Seedbed preparation for planting varies from moldboard plowing and disking for most of the acreage to just disking on some acreage.
No-tillage planting of small grains is a relatively new practice, but it can be and has been successful in many situations. No better way is knowm to plant small grains at the appropriate depth with good seed-soil contact than with a properly adjusted no-till drill planting on a level soil. Several brands of no-till drills do an excellent job.
Drill row spacings of 6-8 inches are superior for small grains than drills with 10-12 inch spacings. Yields will likely be higher and weeds easier to control when no-till small grain is planted in narrow rows. When planting in corn, it is better to plant directly into the stubble rather than chop the stalks.
