Virginia has 14 national champion trees — the nearest are the 86 foot tall pumpkin ash and 23 foot Biltmore Hawthorn in Warrenton.
The big tree search is a constantly ongoing quest with nomination forms and full details on measuring available from the Virginia Forestry Association (1 North Fifth St., Richmond, 23219).
Rodgers says the big pear tree was there when he and his wife moved to “Clifton” 15 years ago. Clifton, which he says was established in 1675, is one of several “sister houses” built in the mid-to-late 18th century. It was previously featured on the annual house tour.
