While two previous editions of the Talisman have received regional awards from the Southern Interscholastic Press Association of the College of Journalism of the University of South Carolina, the award from Columbia University marks th first national recognition won by the magazine.
Wakefield’s Talisman contains selected poetry, short stories, plays, literary criticism and art work of students in grades 1-12. A student staff, with assistance from faculty members Freeman Allen and Helen Ruisi, undertakes responsibility for the production of the magazine each year. The costs of production are partly offset by student fund raising projects.
The “Talisman”, edited by Rebecca McWhorter, takes its name from the Greek concept of “a compact, condensed power used to avert the forces of evil, to keep that which is good pure, and to make that which is tainted pure again” according to the magazine’s forward. “Because the subtle meanings of a poem or picture have the ability to reveal our inner thoughts or
