Genther’s artistic effort begins before he applies the first stroke of paint. “I have to put the gesso on the masonite board first. And you can’t just buy white gesso. I have to boil rabbit skin glue — that’s crystalized rabbit skin — until it gets really sticky. Then I mix in precipitated chalk (a by-product of plaster of paris). Then I paint it on in layers, sometimes six or seven, letting them dry in between each application. It takes the whole day.”
