away. She died when I was very young. I barely remember her but her paintings were all over my grandfather’s house.
“My father was an architect and he painted as a hobby until his retirement three months ago. Now he’s painting full-time.”
Under the influence of this artistic heritage, Gary began studying formally while just a youngster. Instead of watching the morning cartoons, he spent every Saturday in art class from 8 until 10. The teacher turned the lessons into family outings, loading 10 kids into the back of a station wagon for a sketching trip. “He got me really interested in art and taught me to appreciate art,” Genther recalled.
Gary Genther has turned that appreciation and interest into a career. Struggling still to make a name for himself, he does some commercial art, most recently creating an egg tempera painting for an advertising poster for Aplen Glow, sparkling cider produced and bottled outside Front Royal, that will be displayed nationally. But commercial or ghllery, it’s all art, pursued full-time, absorbing all Gary’s energies.
