As in the final meet of the season when a one point loss to Strasburg cost Rappahannock’s cross country runners their perfect record for 1983,'so in last Thursday’s Hull Run District meet, two points cost Rappahannock the district crown.
Again it was the Rams from Strasburg in the role of spoilers. Scott Keithley, the Panthers’ number one runner all year, took first for RCHS, finishing host Clarke County’s course in 17:30. But four of the top 10 places went to Strasburg while Rappahannock took just the top spot, the fifth slot claimed by Ronnie Atkins with his time of 17:58 and sixth place held by Chris Caperton in 18:03.
In the six-school championship, points were awarded for each finisher (one for first, two for second, three for third and so on) with the top five runners for each school counted for standings. Low’ score wins.
Rappahannock runners took first, fifth and sixth (Keithley, Atkins and Caperton), 14th (Ricky Shaw in 19:18) and 15th (Craig Kenvon in 19:22) for a total of 41.
Strasburg grabbed third, seventh, eighth, ninth and 12th for two points less—a title winning 39.
Stonewall w’as third w’ith 62, Brentsville fourth with 119, George Mason fifth with 129 and Clarke County sixth with 132.
