At the candidates’ forum on October 19, there was an issue brought up with the sheriffs candidates that I would like to address.
I was very glad to hear one candidate discuss his feelings regarding the great need for our law enforcement officers to be able to communicate effectively with the community, to attempt (when possible) to “talk-out” conflicts and to recognize and refer those in distress to appropriate community service agencies.
It is important for citizens to appreciate the complex and multi-faceted job of our law enforcement officers. They are employed to uphold the law and protect citizens from harm. The accomplishment of this highest priority entails the ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations, problems and people needing help.
The law enforcement officer not only apprehends criminals; he/she can also prevent a crime from being committed by the way the conflict is handled. This also entails the ability and insight to recognize when additional theraputic intervention is needed in cases such as domestic con
