The growing responsibilities of the sheriff’s department require a sheriff with “the right mixture of law enforcement, management and inter-personal skills,” maintained Mark Wittl. “The need for more education and more professionalism is becoming more obvious.”
In national campaigns, the talk is of candidates with the “right stuff,” said Wittl. “In Rappahannock County, that’s someone who believes in total equality, that the rights of the ordinary citizen are equal to the rights of the wealthy landowner.”
The county also needs a department that will leave people alone when help is not required or sought and a sheriff with no other outside business, no political obligations and no favors owed, Wittl said.
Rappahannock needs a sheriff sensitive to the needs of the people, he said, promising to increase night patrols to deter breakings and enterings, something that citizens have requested.
Coaking hoarsely with a severe cold, John Henry Woodward told the audience that he’s served the county to the best of his ability as a deputy for the past three years. “If I’m elected, I will continue to do that.”
