On the question of uranimum mining, Guest said he didn’t know if legislation could be restrictive enough to apply only to Pittsylvania County (which is asking for such legislation) and not to the rest of the state. An attempt could be made to tie uranium mining approvals to geological structure, such as the absence of limestone, in order to protect groundwater supplies, he said.
“And there’s limestone everywhere in my district. . . Even if the legislation (allowing uranium mining) could be drawn so narrowly that it would only apply to Pittsylvania, it would be a cop-out. We really need to know if its safe for ALL Virginians, not just safe for us because it’s happening somewhere else.”
Land Use
In a recent Fauquier forum, candidates for the board of supervisors voiced support for tightening controls on enabling legislation for land use taxation, a preferential assessment program that allows horticultural, agricultural, forestal and open space land to be assessed at its use value rather than fair market worth for development purposes.
Guest agreed that the rollback period should be extended to 10 years and that the interest rate on rollback taxes should be raised above the current 5 percent level.
