Another area of experimentation McClure likes to tell stories about is fescue stockpiling. Cattle are grazing 354 days a year at Steeles Tavern, says McClure, thanks to fescue for winter feed. But in the early days, fescue seemed strange to some of the local farmers, McClure added. When he was the first to plant Kentucky 31 fescue stockpile, some charitable neighbors brought him a load of hay. They had seen the cattle out grazing in the winter on the thin fescue plants and thought they were being starved to death!
McClure helps maintain the museum at Steeles Tavern which attracts 15,00018,000 visitors each year. Displays show historic agricultural methods as well as experimental conservation techniques being perfected at the research station.
McClure tipped his hat to the district conservation winners, saying, “Gee, thanks! You don’t get paid much but you do a wonderful job in water and soil conservation.”
