Rodgers says he and his family have come up with various larger “waistline” measurements on the tree, but concluded they were taking them at the wrong point on the tree. For uniformity forestry agents run a tape around the tree trunk at the consistent height of 4>/z feet above the ground and they calculate the height with a hypsometer. Crown spread is the average of the widest and narrowest spread of the branches.

In declaring the state’s champion trees each year, these three measurements are added up for each nominee and the tree of each species with the greatest total number of points is declared the current champion. The Flint Hill tree will remain co-champion at least through February when the next results of the big tree search will be compiled.
